Order to Close

The Wellsboro Area School District will comply with Governor Wolf’s order for schools across the Commonwealth to close for 10 business days beginning Monday, March 16th. Because the order does not take effect until Monday, this weekend’s activities will go on as planned. As we just learned of the order late this afternoon, we are still finalizing plans for staff and students; however, at this point we do not anticipate students being required to do schoolwork over the closure. Please check back on this page or follow us on Facebook we will be posting updates.

The Governor’s order is below:

We understand that these are trying times and recognize the impact of the coronavirus on our students and communities.

First and foremost, my top priority as governor – and that of our education leaders – must be to ensure the health and safety of our students and school communities.

As such, I am ordering that all schools in the commonwealth close for the next two weeks.

Be aware that no school district will be penalized if it fails to meet the 180 day or school hours requirements.

The Department of Education will work with intermediate units and other stakeholders to support school districts with any continuity of learning plans they may be pursuing.

Also, the Pennsylvania Department of Education announced today that it received a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to allow eligible schools to serve meals to low income students in a non-congregate setting, such as a drive-through or grab and go, during this closure. We will also work with schools to assist them with those plans.

We appreciate your collaboration as we work together to deal with this difficult issue.

Free Grab and Go Lunches Available

The Wellsboro Area School District will be providing free grab and go lunches for any school district students from noon to 2pm beginning Monday. Lunches may be picked up at the Wellsboro Fire Hall Annex, 21 East Avenue in Wellsboro. Students will be offered two days’ worth of lunches. Lunches will be available for pick up this week Monday through Friday and the week of March 23rd on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Additional days will be added based on need. Students do not need their lunch number to participate. Students do not need to be with the parents when the lunches are picked up and friends, neighbors, and family are welcome to pick up lunches with a note from the parent. Edit: We added the clarification that students can get two days of lunches each time they come. We did not intend they can only get two lunches over the two weeks.
